Crochet Squares Throw

January 21, 2014

IMG_3717

Well I finally got my grey crochet throw finished and I’ve written up the pattern for the square.  I had to teach myself crochet to do it, but I’m glad I did because I am a crochet fan now and have been crocheting lots of little other things, too:

I crocheted 30 squares in all and then just crocheted them together, using a single crochet stitch.  I put a touch of purple and green here and there, but overall the color is gray which I love.

I have gone over the pattern with a fine tooth comb so that it reads correctly.  Since I am a novice crocheter, I hope the pattern reads okay for you guys.  Let me know if there are any problems with it.

The “Leaf” Row is probably the hardest row to get down but once you do it a few times I swear you don’t even need the pattern anymore for that row.  The “yarn overs” in that row are very fun to do, I think.  And it zips right along.

The yarn I used produced the specific drape that I wanted in this throw.  For the first time, I didn’t use wool and it was very different.  The cotton was stiffer to work with but created a more defined stitch than most wools would.  It was a beautiful yarn from Cascade – Ultra Pima. The main color was the Taupe – go to my Ravelry page to see details.

ELAINE’S CROCHET SQUARE:

for a printable version of this pattern click here

each square is 9 rows

(stars are repeats)

ch 5, join into ring or do Magic Ring

Row 1: Chain 2 (counts as 1 partial dc), 1 partial dc, yo and through the 2 loops, ch1. *Work 2 partial dc & then yo and through all 3 loops, ch1* 7 more times.   8 clusters total.

Row 2:  sl st to 2nd chain,  ch 1.   *1sc, 3 dc, 1 sc  in next chain loop space*.  Repeat in each ch loop around.  8 total.

Row 3:  sl st between two petals, ch 1, 1 sc in center of petal, ch 5.   *1 sc in center of next petal, ch 5.*  Repeat. 8 total. sl st to beginning ch 1.

Row 4:  * 1 sc, 5 dc, 1 sc  in the ch5  loop space *   repeat in each ch5 loop space around – 8 total.  Sl st at the beginning of the next petal

Row 5: (leaf row):  ch 1 (=1 hdc)  *ch 4, 1 sc in center of petal, ch 3.

Make  Leaf: yo twice, hook into last sc of petal, yo = 4 loops on hook.
yo and through 2 loops 2 times – 2 loops remain.
yo twice and insert hook into same sc of the petal work, yo = 5 loops on hook
yo and through 2 loops 2 times  = 3 loops remain
yo twice and insert hook into first sc of next petal, yo = 6 loops on hook.
yo and through 2 loops 2 times = 4 loops remain
yo twice and insert hook into same sc, yo = 7 loops on hook
yo and through 2 loops 2 times = 5 loops on hook
yo and through all 5 loops, (this completes 1 leaf)

ch 4,1 sc in center of dc of next petal, ch 4, 1 hdc between next 2 petals

Repeat from * 3 more times

ch 4, ending last repeat with sl st to 2nd ch at beg in rnd instead of 1 hdc.

Row 6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc),   *4 dc in the ch 4 loop, 1 dc in the hdc.
make corner:  3 dc, , 2 tr, ch 4, 2 tr, 3 dc, 1 dc in the hdc*  repeat all the way around, ending with a 4dc and a sl st to 2nd ch at beg of round

Row 7:  ch 3 (counts as 1dc), dc in each stitch all the way around. When you come to a corner: 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in the ch 4 space makes a corner.

sl st to 2nd ch at beg of round

Row 8:  (skip space row) ch 4 (counts as a dc) ,* sk next dc, dc in next dc, ch1  all the way across. Make  corner:  2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch 2 space.    Repeat all the way around.

sl st to 2nd ch at beg of round

Row 9:  ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in every ch 1 sp and every dc across.  Corner:  2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc

I made 30 squares and crocheted them together, just using single crochet.

For the edging, I did a series of 9 stitches all the way across, making little arches, working one stitch in every stitch on the throw:  1 sc, 2 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc, 1 sc, 2 ss.   I just repeated that little arch all the way around.

Here is the same square crocheted up in some fine linen thread that I’ve been experimenting with on a tiny crochet hook – so fun!

  1. I am a knitter and have been wanting to learn to crochet! This is a beautiful throw…can’t wait to try it!

  2. Your work is just lovely. Thank you for sharing your pattern.

  3. Wo! Rather ambitious. It’s beautiful. I hope you enjoy it for a long long time. Is your had sore? Mine would be! Thanks for sharing.

  4. The touches of color are perfect. It is an elegant throw.

  5. Thank you so much for the pattern! I picked up my yarn today and can’t wait to get started!

  6. This is beautiful and I love the soft gray color.

  7. My pima came over the weekend and I have two squares made. They make up quickly. As a new-to-crochet person, you wrote a pretty good pattern. Crochet patterns are all difficult IMO, but yours was better than most. Good job.

    • Yay! Thank you – I was a little worried but I’m glad you let me know the pattern works.

  8. It’s a beautiful throw and the pattern is well written. The photographic progession is excellent and very useful.

  9. This is lovely! Approximately, how much of the main color did you use? I’m a knitter and am toying with the idea of learning to crochet to make this!

    • Lisbeth: You know, I wish I had kept track of my skeins but I didn’t. I’m so bad with that. I have no idea how many yards I used. Sorry!

  10. I’m trying to work my way through your pattern and searched on line and checked at my yarn store for a description of the partial dc. The lady at the yarn store had never heard of it. I’ve looked at your video many times but can’t make heads or tails out of it as I’m such a novice. Could you point me in the direction of a good step by step description? I know part of my problem is unfamiliarity with crochet so I bought a book but it’s not in there unless there is another name for the stitch.
    Thanks for your time!

    • Hey Lisbeth: A partial double crochet is made by starting to make a regular double crochet, but after you yo and bring the yarn through the first two loops, you do not then yo and bring it through the last two loops. Bringing it through just the first two loops completes your partial dc. Then you make another one and you have three loops on your needle. Then you yo and bring it through all three loops. Here is an explanation that might help. This cluster ring design is worked by doing a series of partial double crochets: http://www.ehow.com/how_12108729_crochet-cluster-ring.html
(It is not the same, by the way, as a half double crochet (hdc).) Hope this helps.

  11. Thank you! I appreciate the time you are taking for my questions. I’ve made it to row 6. Does the chain 4 that is between the 2 sets of 2 tr ‘fits’ over the leaf and then the balance of the row beginning with the 2nd tr is worked in the ch4 to the left of the leaf? This is how I understand the directions: In the first chain four of the row below, make the 4dc and then dc in the hdc. In the next chain of 4 it would be 3dc, 2tr then chain 4. In the chain 4 to the left of the leaf (which brings the chain 4 up and over the leaf), do the 2tr, 3dc and then 1dc in the hdc. If this is correct, then there are now 3 sets of chain 4 before the next leaf – with the 2tr, ch4, 2tr not placing over the leaf. Am I crazy?

This exercise in learning to crochet has renewed my appreciation of anyone trying something new and different from their usual craft! I’ve been a knitter for 48 years!

    • Lisbeth: yes, the chain 4 that is between the 2 sets of triple crochets fits over the corner leaf – it creates the new corner. Basically, on this whole row you are simply chaining 4 in all the chain 4 loops on the sides, doing a dc in the hdcs and then when you get to the corners, you do the 3 dc, 2tr, ch 4, 2tr, 3 dc that creates the corners. Does this help?

  12. Thanks! I finished it. I ended up doing two sets of 4dc along a side until just before the leaf. At that point, I did the corner stitches, c4, and then the rest of the corner stitches. It looked like your photos so I thought it couldn’t be too wrong 🙂 Thank you so much for your help. Now onto square 2!

  13. plus the dc’s over the hdc’s. Love the new lingo!

  14. Love the subtle colors of this throw and thanks for sharing the pattern:) I’m learning to join as you go finally:)

  15. I am almost done with the throw. working on the border. did it in sage green and lavender. thank you for the inspiration.

  16. Thanks, enjoyed making the Throw. You can see my work on Ravelry.

  18. I love it!!
Thank you for share your beautiful crochet throw!!
    Love the colors!!
Do you have diagram? instead pattern?
    Thank you so much 🙂
    Hugs :))

  19. Hi!! Thank you for posting such a beautiful pattern! I’m so excited to make this for my mom! How many skeins of each color would you say that you needed?

    • Sorry – I did not keep track. People have asked me and I feel bad that I don’t know!

  20. Hello!
    Love love love it!
How many color squares did you make. I see they are mixed but out of 30 total, how many did you incorporate? I’m making this for a gift in October & I would love your guidance/advice 🙂
    Thanks
    Robin

  21. Robin: I only added a touch of color to about 10 of the 30 squares. Hope this helps!

  22. Hi there I was working on a crochet throw just because I like to crochet but not really liking any pattern I came across. I did not like how my squares looked nor the colours and I got frustrated and again and again looking through the internet. Finally I saw your throw and it was love at first sight!!! I can’t get the yarn in Australia but i found it in the UK and I don’t care that it is going to be expensive I’m going to get it!!! Could you please tell me how much of the grey you used to do your throw please and also how wide and long your throw is? I would really appreciate it thanks so much. I just did one square and had no problems to follow your directions thanks so much Kind regards Simone

    • Simone: The crochet throw is about 31″ x 37″. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep track of how much yarn I used – sorry! Several people have asked me that. I wish I had.

    • I’ve made one and I’m on my second. I’m getting 3 squares out of one skein of Cascade Ultra Pima called for in the pattern using the 3.75 hook. (So that’s 10 skeins for the main color). If you use color accents on a few squares, then one skein of each should do it.
Hope this helps (I see you posted this 8 months ago!).

      • Simone: Thank you for sharing this information with others! It should help. I’m just sorry I didn’t keep track of my yardage. Thanks!

  23. It really is a lovely throw. The few bit of colour are just perfect. And because you are a novice in crochet, you are probably more aware of what problems a beginner can run into.
Nice of you to share your pattern.

  24. Here’s a funny story. I loved this pattern as many do, and started out with one bag of cotton upstairs and one in the family room. Sometimes I would work up, and sometimes in the evenings, I would work downstairs. I get a lot done that way! Come time to put all the squares together and it appears that the upstairs crochet hook was imperceptibly (to me) larger, although labeled the same as the other. Different manufacturers. So the upstairs squares were all larger than the downstairs squares. No way would all the squares go together! Hmm. So, yes! Order more cotton, and now I have TWO throws, one up and one down. Not too embarrassing?

    • No Way! That’s awful! What a shame the hook were not exactly the same size. That’s too bad but what a funny story! I guess you are going to have two throws.

      • Love ’em both!

  25. I love the colors, very elegant.

  26. do you have a diagram of this granny square?

    • Shawn: No, I’m afraid I have not written a diagram pattern. Sorry!

  27. I’ve just come across your beautiful throw which will be perfect for a wedding present for my niece next year. I just wanted to check are the stitches uk or US. Many thanks Anna

  28. Here we are so many years since your initial post of your delicate pattern and it is still my go to throw for a pretty gift. Thank you!
